British Columbians may soon have more access to $10 a day child care.

The province has opened applications for child care providers looking to offer the low-cost service for local families.

The expansion is intended to offer more low cost services and reduce the average monthly cost of full-time child care for families in B.C. from $1,000 to $200.

It’s expected that the expansion will increase the number of affordable child care spaces from more than 6,500 to 12,500 by December 2022.

Applications will be reviewed and approved on a rolling basis, based on priority criteria, allowing some sites to offer $10 a day child care spaces before the end of the year.

All types of child care providers offering services for children age five and younger are encouraged to apply to the program. The deadline to apply is Aug. 18.

The expansion of the $10 a day program is being provided through the Canada-British Columbia Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, which calls for the Government of Canada to contribute $3.2 billion between 2021 and 2026.
