Multiple RCMP officers were injured, and neighbours were said be scared, after police tried to break up a large out-of-control house party in Kelowna.

Kelowna bylaw requested assistance from RCMP just before 11:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26, in the 200 block of Crossridge Crescent in the Glenmore area.

Mounties say during attempts to gain control of the crowds, officers used non-lethal use-of-force options, including oleoresin capsicum spray (OC/pepper spray).

Multiple people were arrested.

“This was a highly volatile call, the situation was frightening for the neighbours, and it resulted in multiple RCMP officers receiving minor injuries”, said Constable Mike Della-Paolera, media relations officer.

Della-Paolera said one police officer was injured after being assaulted.

Six people were held until they were sober and able to care for themselves. One accused was released on an appearance notice. BC Emergency Health Services provided care to those individuals requiring decontamination from the pepper spray.

Della-Paolera said every party has the potential to get out of hand when not monitored and controlled properly.

“Please speak to our young people about a safety plan when they are planning to use alcohol and drugs. It is necessary for hosts to understand their legal and community obligations for hosting safe and respectful parties,” the officer said.

The police investigation is ongoing with further charges being considered.
