Two drivers allegedly caught street racing in Kelowna have been fined and had their vehicles taken away.

Police said an officer was on patrol Saturday, Sept. 17 around 5:15 p.m. when they saw two vehicles drag racing from the intersection at Clement Avenue to Clifton Road.

“The officer followed the vehicles, a green 2019 Ford Mustang and a blue 2005 Chrysler 200, and observed the vehicles reach speeds in excess of 120 km/h in a marked 60 km/h zone passing other motorists,” Kelowna RCMP Const. Mike Della-Paolera, media relations officer, said.

The vehicles came to a stop at the red light at Clifton Roade at which point the officer positioned his marked police car in front and directed the drivers to pull to the curb.

According to the police, both drivers admitted to the offence and received excessive speeding tickets, a $368 fine and their cars were impounded for seven days.

“These dangerous driving behaviours pose an extremely high risk, to not only the drivers of these vehicles, but also to innocent drivers and their occupants,” Sgt. Mark Booth of the Kelowna RCMP Traffic Service, said. “We take these incidents extremely serious and therefore we hold these violators accountable, by removing their ability to continue these high risk actions.”
