Structure fire spreads to nearby trees
City and provincial firefighters battled a blaze spread by the wind in Kelowna Monday afternoon.
Just before 3 p.m. on Oct. 10, the Kelowna Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a structure fire that had spread to the surrounding brush at 4519 June Springs Road.
“The first arriving crews reported a large structure had burnt to the ground and strong winds had spread the Rank 3 fire into the trees moving east,” Captain Chris Zimmermann said.
The fire was approximately two hectares in size, and city crews deployed along the north and south flanks to limit spread.
The BC Wildfire Service responded with two helicopters and one ground crew to assist city firefighters.
Crews remained on scene overnight to extinguish hot spots.
“The fire is currently under investigation to determine a cause,” Zimmermann said.
