UPDATE: 12:00 p.m. Dec. 3, 2022

Vernon’s Canadian Tire Store will re-open it’s auto service centre on Monday, but the main store still remains closed while water and smoke-damaged stock is disposed of.

This was posted on the company’s Facebook page:

“Our Auto Service Centre will open on Monday, Dec. 5 at 8 a.m. Hours of operation for the Auto Service Centre will be Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Sundays).

The company said the remainder of the store is still currently closed due to repairs from the fire on Nov. 19.

“We are working hard to re-open the store as soon as possible to serve the community of Vernon. The fire comes at a costly time for the retailer missing Black Friday and part of the busy December shopping cycle,” the company stated.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by RCMP, and is considered suspicious.

Original Story Nov. 19

An overnight fire outside the Canadian Tire building in Vernon is being treated as suspicious.

Just before 3:00 a.m. this morning, Vernon Fire Rescue Services was dispatched to a report of a structure fire in the 4900-block of 27th Street in the Village Green Shopping Centre.

Crews were faced with a large fire outside the Canadian Tire building, within a locked compound.

The first crews on scene knocked the fire down quickly and then gained access into the building to make sure the extension to the structure was extinguished.

“Additional firefighters were called in to support the on-site crews and respond to other calls,” said Deputy Fire Chief Alan Hofsink. “There were 14 firefighters on scene, who were also joined by members of the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP and BC Ambulance Service.”

No injuries were reported in the incident.

There is extensive damage to the exterior of the building and minor fire and smoke damage inside.

“The fire has been deemed suspicious and the file has been handed over to the RCMP for investigation,” a city news release stated.

It’s not known what impact the fire could have on the business at this point.

Vernon Matters has reached out to the company for more information.
