Kelowna RCMP are investigating sudden death of an 18 month old toddler on the weekend at a home in the 1300 block of Richter. The Kelowna Serious Crime Unit is in charge of the investigation, along with Investigative Services, the Coroner and the Ministry of Child & Family Development. Police say they’re in the early stages and there will be no further comment for now.

RCMP believe a fire at Vernon’s Canadian Tire on the weekend was deliberately set. The blaze damaged the garden centre outside the store in the Village Green Shopping Centre, and also caused interior damage as well. The store was still closed yesterday.

NASA’s Orion capsule has reached the moon, whipping around the far side and getting to within 130km of the surface on its way to a record-breaking orbit with test dummies sitting in for astronauts. It’s the first time a capsule has visited the moon since NASA’s Apollo program 50 years ago. It has flown over Tranquility Base where the Eagle lunar module landed in 1969.

RCMP in Prince Rupert, say one person is dead and another critically injured in a shooting in the Ocean Centre Mall yesterday morning. Police have not indicated if the two people knew each other, however they did say there was no threat to the general public.

We can only hope it will lead to lower prices at the pump. Crude oil prices slumped to a 10-month low after a report that OPEC-plus may increase output at its next meeting. Oil was trading around $75.42 a barrel, down from it’s $110 peak in June.

A City of Montreal committee is recommending that a toppled statue of Canada’s first prime minister should not be put back in a downtown park. The committee says the city should distance itself from the policies of assimilation and genocide against Indigenous Peoples that were championed by Sir John A. Macdonald.

Most British Columbians agree with the province’s decision not to pursue a bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics. Research Co. asked 800 adults and 57% said it was a good move. The company says there was majority support among voters for all three of BC’s major political parties.

The director of Canada’s intelligence service told the prime minister he supported the decision to invoke the Emergencies Act last winter. David Vigneault says no such threat materialized during the Freedom Convoy protests, however he was satisfied that a threat to national security had to be interpreted differently in the context of the Emergencies Act.

Oregon Governor Kate Brown says she is pardoning an estimated 45,000 people convicted of simple possession of marijuana. She’s also forgiving more than $14 million in unpaid fines and fees. Brown says no one deserves to be forever saddled with the impacts of a conviction for a crime that is no longer on the books in Oregon.

Sports

The Canucks winning streak ended at 2. Giving up a 2 goal lead at one point, they lost 5-4 to Vegas. Tomorrow night they’re in Colorado.

Three WHL skaters including Kelowna Rocket Andrew Cristall have earned updated ‘A’ ratings by NHL Central Scouting, bringing the total number of ‘A’ rated players for the Draft to 10. Cristall leads Kelowna in scoring with 35 points.

Lions’ quarterback Nathan Rourke has been forced to postpone a pair of NFL workouts for a week after coming down with the flu after his flight home from the Grey Cup in Regina.

Monday Night Football was ‘muy bueno’ for the San Francisco 49ers. In Mexico City they beat the Arizona Cardinals 38-10.
