The official numbers for the Kelowna Municipal Election have been released. Tom Dyas is the new mayor after securing just over 21-thousand votes after almost 35-thousand people cast a ballot. Former MP Ron Cannan topped the polls for council. He was followed by Loyal Wooldridge, Rick Webber, Gord Lovegrove, Mohini Singh, Luke Stack, Charlie Hodge and Maxine DeHart.

A hand and electronic recount were done to determine the 6th councillor for West Kelowna. On election night Garrett Millsap led Tom Groat by just 1 vote. We’re told Millsap will be in council, but the final result won’t be released until next month.

A charge of first-degree murder has been laid in the death of Burnaby RCMP officer Const. Shaelyn Yang. She was stabbed to death Tuesday during an altercation while she accompanied a Burnaby city staff member at a homeless campsite. The BC Prosecution Service says Jongwon Ham is accused in her death and will stay in custody until his next court appearance November 2.

Kelowna has the dubious honour of being one of the most rat-infested cities in Canada. According to pest control company Orkin, Toronto is number 1, followed by Vancouver and Burnaby, with Kelowna being number 4 in the country. It ranks cities based on the number of commercial and residential rodent treatments for both rats and mice carried out in the past year.

Interior Health is warning about an automated call scam impersonating the authority. The call claims you have been exposed to monkeypox. I-H says to disregard it as it doesn’t use automated calls to notify people about exposure to an infectious disease… a nurse will call you.

The cheque will soon be in the mail. People who receive the GST rebate can expect to see an extra cheque this year that will double the amount of the benefit for the next six months. The Liberal’s Bill C-30 became law. The government previously indicated that it would take three to four weeks for the payments to go out after the bill received royal assent.

BC’s Independent Investigation Office has determined that police are not responsible for the deaths of two people in Peachland in June. A 911 call was received reporting that a person had been shot, and a second person was planning to hurt themselves. When the ERT entered the home on Garraway Place two hours later, two people were found dead.

Canadians are continuing to feel the pinch at the grocery store as food prices soar at the fastest rate in four decades. Stats Canada’s latest consumer price index showed food prices were up a staggering 11.4 percent compared to a year ago. Among other staples, we also paid a lot more for fresh fruit, which was up 12.7 percent, and 16.4 percent for coffee and tea.

Russian President Vladimir Putin doubled down yesterday on his faltering invasion of Ukraine with a declaration of martial law in four illegally annexed regions. There are preparations within Russia for draconian new restrictions and crackdowns. In announcing martial law effective today, Putin told his Security Council, “We are working to solve very difficult large-scale tasks to ensure Russia’s security and safe future.”

At Prospera Place last night, the Kelowna Rockets dropped a 3-0 decision to the Brandon Wheat Kings. The other WHL team from Manitoba, the Winnipeg Ice visit Kelowna Saturday night.

Thursday Night Football hopefully won’t be a ‘yawner’ this week although it has the markings of one, as the Saints travel to Arizona. Both teams are 2 & 4.

The Vancouver Canucks will be hoping for a couple of things tonight… not to blow a multi-goal lead, and get their first win of the season. Face off against the Wild in Minnesota is at 5.

The Calgary Flames and city officials will restart negotiations for a new arena. Their previous deal, agreed to in 2019, collapsed late last year when the estimated cost of the project rose and the Flames pulled their support.

In their first regular season game last night, the Toronto Raptors beat Cleveland 108-105 with Pascal Siakam picking up 23 points. They travel to the Big Apple tomorrow to take on the Brooklyn Nets.

The PGA Tour is back from Japan for this week’s CJ Cup in South Carolina. Rory McIlroy is the tourney’s defending champ which will be played in Ridgeland, which is just north of Savannah.
