We will have a new name for a BC political party to go with its new leader tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow the province will have a new premier. After being chosen by party members, the NDP’s David Eby will be sworn in at 10am at the Musqueam Community Centre in Vancouver to become the 37th premier of BC.

The Canadian Real Estate Association says last month’s home sales amounted to the first monthly gain since February. They were also up on a month-over-month basis in 60 percent of all local markets, with Greater Vancouver up 6%. The national average home price was $644,000 in October, down 9.9 percent from the same month last year.

Free parking on Saturdays will be back in Kelowna in December. It passed unanimously in the new council even though the city will give up 35-thousand dollars in revenue. It does not include off-street lots, no parking and handicap zones and time limits will still be in effect.

After some people complained that the name Brownies had caused them personal harm, Girl Guides Canada will be changing the name of the group for 7 and 8 year olds. The organization doesn’t have a new name yet, but says a change will likely be made by next September. The programs and badges will stay the same.

Gas-electric hybrids were the most dependable vehicles sold in the U.S. in the past year, while big pickup trucks and fully electric automobiles performed the worst in Consumer Reports’ annual reliability survey. Most hybrids are sold by Toyota and Lexus, the top two brands in Consumer Reports’ rankings. Tesla, which makes the top selling electric vehicles, rose four spots to rank #19.

A public hearing later this month is one of the steps to determine if a new fire hall will be built in North Glenmore. Kelowna council is looking at zoning changes for the site just north of the landfill. The current hall on Valley Road would be taken down and the property would eventually be turned back into agricultural land.

Merritt Mounties are looking to connect the dots of an early morning shooting yesterday where the mayor says over 100 rounds were fired. No one was hurt. RCMP believe that the shootings are targeted and there is no further risk to the public.

It was still unclear last night if it was Russian missiles that crossed into territory of NATO member Poland during a massive barrage. Most missiles hit Ukraine’s power grid and cut electricity to much of Moldova, which is a former Soviet republic. Polish media reported that two people died after a projectile struck an area where grain was drying in a village near the border with Ukraine.

Sports

The Rivalry Series between the Canadian and U-S women’s hockey teams kicked off in Kelowna last night with overtime, which featured a missed Canada penalty shot. It ended 4-3 United States in a shootout. They move to Kamloops tomorrow.

The Canucks hung on for a 5-4 win in Buffalo to wrap up the road trip last night. Vancouver’s next game is at home on Friday against the Kings.

Lions’ quarterback Nathan Rourke will begin working out for NFL teams next week. He is under contract with the Lions through next season, though players are allowed to leave for the NFL.

The Raptors are playing at home tonight. The Miami Heat visit Scotiabank Arena with a 4:30 tip-off.
