Top Stories – Oct 6 – Attempted Robbery
Police say an alleged would-be robber from Kelowna ended up with a broken leg after an attempted hold-up. RCMP say 25 year old Lenny Lipscombe pointed a weapon at the victim through a vehicle window and demanded the cash they had just withdrawn from an ATM. In an attempt to escape, the victim backed out of the parking spot and accidentally hit the suspect, breaking his leg. After being treated at hospital the suspect remains in custody until his next court appearance on Wednesday.
The federal Industry Minister says the country’s top five grocery chains have agreed to take concrete action to stabilize food prices. He says shoppers will soon start to see discounts, price-freezes and price-matching campaigns. He says these measures will create a more competitive marketplace, which will bring benefits to Canadians.

Reminder that the Parkinson Rec Centre will be open Thanksgiving Monday, but only from 10-3. The Glenmore Landfill is business as usual from 7:30am to 4:45pm. And while the Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery administration office will be closed, the Cemetery gates will be open from 7am to 9pm.
“Freedom Convoy” organizer Pat King’s lawyer failed to convince a judge to move her client’s trial out of Ottawa. It’s the second time she has unsuccessfully argued the trial should be moved because of King’s notoriety. The judge said any issues of bias can be dealt with during jury selection when the trial begins late next month.
The U.S. shot down a Turkish drone that had come in too close to its troops on the ground in Syria. Typically, the NATO allies, work in close coordination in conducting air maneuvers. An official said the drone had been flying in an “unsafe” and “unsynchronized” manner.
A lot of people still haven’t got the call about talking on the phone when driving. In just 2 hours on Tuesday, Kelowna RCMP handed out 22 tickets to drivers on Enterprise that had their phone to their ear. Another four were left a message about not wearing a seatbelt. Each distracted driving ticket was worth $368.
An award-winning travel magazine said BC’s capital city tops its 2023 list of the world’s best cities. Condé Nast Traveller said Victoria’s restaurant and nightlife scene is “something to be celebrated,” while the city “embraces adventure,” and “draws outdoorsy types.” Readers gave Victoria, San Sebastián in Spain, and Singapore the top 3 spots.
UBC researchers are making it clear that using certain diabetes drugs for weight loss might be effective, but they also carry some hefty risks. They say people using drugs such as Ozempic are at a higher risk for pancreatitis, bowel obstruction and stomach paralysis than those using other types of weight loss medications. The study was based on a four-year, random sample of health insurance claims of 16 million U-S patients using drugs such as semaglutide (sema-GLOO’-tide,) the active ingredient in Ozempic.

A couple of home games this long weekend for the Kelowna Rockets. The Spokane Chiefs are in town tomorrow for a 7:05 faceoff, so that means the pregame show on 1047 The Lizard begins at 6:35. Monday’s game against the Victoria Royals goes at 12:35 at Prospera Place.
Last home game of the regular season for the Okanagan Sun tomorrow afternoon at the Apple Bowl. It’s a 4pm start against the Kamloops Broncos who they beat 74-14 last week.
It’s a battle for first place in the CFL West tonight at BC Place stadium. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are in Vancouver to take on the Lions at 7. Both teams have 11 and 4 records.
It will be busy in downtown Vancouver because across the street from BC Place the Canucks have their last preseason game. It’s against the Flames, also at 7.
